Mastering The Macabre
Mastering the Macabre is creative writing class dedicated to the art of writing gothic horror fiction. In this course, you’ll learn the tools of the trade to create a suspenseful and terrifying horror short story in 2,000 words or less.
Throughout the course, we’ll read excerpts from Stephen King, Edgar Allan Poe, Shirley Jackson, Thomas Harris, and more. The objective of this course is to help you identify the elements of a truly terrifying story so you can conceive and execute it yourself.
Elements taught include: basic storytelling structure, recognizing and executing horror story elements through the use of visualization and extended vocabulary development, and basic editing skills to use in this course and beyond.
Mastering the Macabre is designed to make students feel comfortable in writing thrilling and beautifully rendered gothic prose while also building upon the elements of basic creative storytelling skillset.

Abigail Sheaffer is an Independent Marketing and Communications Specialist who works in the nonprofit sector, primarily with virtual marketing campaigns. For five years, Abigail worked as the editor-in-chief of Chicago Literati, one of Chicago's most esteemed literary journals. She has been published 15 times and counting. In her free time, Abigail enjoys gourmet cooking and runs an epicurean blog yclept, Abby Cooks Stuff.
